In two of Borgarnes’s oldest buildings The Settlement Center is devoted to recreating Iceland’s earliest days and introduces visitors to one of the best known heroes of the Icelandic Sagas, Egil Skalla-Grimsson. It also houses a cozy licensed restaurant, a café and a souvenir shop. The Center consists of three buildings, the warehouse, the merchant house and the reception hall.
The Agricultural Museum of Iceland presents the agricultural heritage and seeks to explain the history of Icelandic agriculture with emphases on the 19th and the 20th centuries. The museum has an extensive collection of farm artifacts. For example, the first plows and other horse-driven equipment and the first tractors imported to Iceland, as well as the more modern artifacts of current times. The museum has Iceland´s largest collection of farm machinery which goes back to 1880. You can also see the ancient Icelandic cow (the original Viking cow!) in a modern environment and explore the cultural landscape at one of the first modern farms in Iceland at the Hvanneyri Agricultural School (founded in 1889).
See the magnificent and unique Deildartunguhver hot spring, Europe’s water most hot spring. Today 180 liters of 97°C hot water flows every second. Deildartunguhver is the watersource for the spa Krauma located next to Deildartunguhver. This geyser is the supply of geothermal water for the whole region surrounding Borgarfjörður.
Hraunfossar is the collective name for dozens of streaming waterfalls flowing out of a lava wall in Hallmundarhraun. The waterfalls flow into the glacial river Hvítá in Borgarfjörður. The waterfalls can be easily viewed from a platform next to the parking lot. You can also enjoy a short walk up the gorge next to Hraunfossar where you can find the powerfull waterfall Barnafoss (Childrens falls) and the broken stone arch streching over the stream.
