The tour starts with a pickup at your accommodation in the greater metropolitan area of Reykjavik. From there we head head on towards the magnificent Thingvellir national park. In the year 930 AD vikings founded the Icelandic parliament Althing (Alþingi) at Þingvellir. Chieftains would gather from all regions of Iceland to enforce laws and agree on national politics. Little did the vikings know that the area they chose for their gathering is a geological wonder on top of the Mid-Atlantic rift that runs through Iceland with tectonic plates pulling apart.

The tour

First a brief introduction with your driver guide who goes over the itinerary and learns about your preference of travel. 

During the tour your guide will tell you stories and facts about Iceland’s culture, history and way of life throughout the centuries since the viking settlement in 874.

You will be visiting the historic Thingvellir national park with beautiful scenery through the Icelandic countryside on the way. Stop at Hakid viewpoint to get a view of Thingvellir from high up. Walk through Almannagjá canyon, a path leading down to the park from Hakid viewpoint. Stand at the ancient foundation site of the world’s oldest parliament, Althing and see Drekkingarhylur, a deep pool at the base of a waterfall with barbaric history. Walk past Peningagjá, a chasm with crystal-clear water and a popular make-a-wish spot.

Hakið viewpoint offers exceptional views over the national park and the great lake Þingvallarvatn.

Almannagjá canyon offers a walking path from the viewpoint down the canyon and towards the location of the foundation site of Alþingi.

Alþingi parliament is believed to be the world’s oldest parliament. The historic site where vikings founded their parliament in 930 AD can be found at Þingvellir.

Drekkingarhylur is a deep pool at the base of a waterfall that was once used for executions in ancient times. 

Peningagjá is a water filled chasm both crystal-clear and deep is a popular spot to throw a coin in and make a wish. This also happens to be a very popular diving location. 8
